Caveman Cooking at Memphis in May

If you are not familiar with Memphis in May or with Caveman Cooking, let me take a moment to familiarize you.  Memphis in May (MIM) is also known as The Superbowl of Swine and is considered the World Championship of Barbecue competitions.  It is an amazing event where the top competitors gather to see who can win in 3 main categories, pork shoulder, ribs and the king of BBQW, whole hog!  The there winners (one in each category) are then judged and one of them is crowned Grand Champion.  Congrats to our friends at The Shed BBQ  & Blues Joint in Ocean Springs, Ms. as this years Grand Champions.  Not only do they know how to make award winning BBQ, but they are a total blast to be around and are just great people in general.  Our hats are off to you Brooke, Brad and the rest of the team.

As far as the latter, caveman cooking, this is something that is not only delicious, but it is really cool to behold.  It involves cooking your protein directly on a blazing hot bed of coals.  Notice, I said ON, not ABOVE the coals.  That is correct, you cook the food right on the coals.  It requires blazing hot charcoal and the guts to try to pull something like this off.  Well, our very own Captain Ron should probably be renamed Captain Caveman as he has become a regular professional at it.  He is so good at it that the folks over at Home Depot had him give a demonstration of it live on stage at MIM in the HD Outdoor Kitchen Area.

Yes, Ron represented FOGO Charcoal very well and had the crowd salivating with his caveman seared NY Strips from Demkota Ranch Beef Company.  Let’s just say that the crowd was enthusiastic to hear and see all about this marvel of culinary uniqueness and when they tasted it at the end, they were glad they stuck around.
