Are you ready to embark on a taste sensation that'll make your taste buds soar? Look no further than the legendary Flying Dutchman Burger from West Coast Burger Chain, In-N-Out! This fast-food marvel isn't just your average burger; it's a beefy journey that'll leave you craving more. Oh, did I mention that this thing is in outer space with how viral it has gone? It has taken over social media completely. So buckle up and prepare for takeoff as we dive into the world of the Flying Dutchman Burger with a sprinkle of dad jokes along the way!
Why did we make this?
When we have seen the 437 videos taking over the internet this week about this burger, curiosity got the best of us. We had to find out if it is as good as a traditional burger. We actually opted to test it out three different ways. The first is the traditional Flying Dutchman, the second was a lettuce wrapped Dutchman, and third was a grilled Dutchman with a bun and all. Captain Ron really took one for the team and taste tested all three. The best part? He had company. His daughter Kaitlyn joined him for the taste test. They unanimously agreed on which was their favorite. Which do you think it was?
What is the Flying Dutchman Burger?
Before we dive into the juicy details, let's unravel the mystery of the Flying Dutchman Burger. Picture this: two succulent beef patties, perfectly seasoned and seared to perfection, covered in cheese and sandwiched between 2 slices of caramelized onions. But here's the twist – there's no bun! That's right; the Flying Dutchman forgoes traditional bread in favor of a veggie delight that's sure to satisfy even the most discerning of carnivores.
Setting the Stage for Lift-off: Ingredients
To craft your very own Flying Dutchman Burger, you'll need:
- Premium ground beef (we used 80/20 ground chuck for maximum flavor)
- Slices of your favorite cheese (I find that processed American works best)
- Salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings
Preparation: Assembling Your Burger
- Start by shaping your ground beef into thin patties. Remember, the thinner, the better – we're aiming for maximum melt-in-your-mouth goodness.
- Season your patties generously with salt, pepper, and any other desired seasonings.
- Fire up your grill or skillet over medium-high heat and cook your onion slices and patties until they're perfectly seared on both sides.
- Just before your patties are cooked to perfection, top each one with a generous slice of cheese and let it melt into ooey-gooey goodness.
Time to Fly: Serving Your Flying Dutchman Burger
Now comes the moment you've been waiting for – assembling your Flying Dutchman Burger! Simply stack one cheesy patty on top of the other, and a generous smattering of the sauce for an extra flavor boost. Now, pile it on a grilled onion slice and top it with another. Who needs a bun when you have this protein-packed masterpiece?
Inflight Entertainment: Dad Jokes Galore
As you sink your teeth into the tasty goodness of your Flying Dutchman Burger, why not enjoy some in-flight entertainment with a side of dad jokes? Here are a few to get you started:
- Why don't burgers ever tell secrets? Because they might spill the beans!
- What did the cheese say when it looked in the mirror? Halloumi!
- Why did the tomato turn red? Because it saw the salad dressing!
- What do you call cheese that isn't yours? Nacho cheese!

Directions:
- Prepare the sauce by combining all ingredients and allow it to refrigerate for at least one hour. If you can make it the day before, even better. #ToTheRefrigerator
- Fill a chimney starter with FOGO All Natural Briquets. Place 2 FOGO Fire Starters under the chimney and using your Grill Torch, light the starters. Allow them to burn until the top coals begin to ash over. Carefully pour the coals on the charcoal grate. Using your cherry picker tongs, arrange the coals in a single layer and place the cooking grate on the grill.
- Place the Cast Iron Half Moon Pan on the grate and allow it to heat up. Put enough Wagyu Tallow to coat the bottom of the pan. Place the onion slices on the griddle and cook until golden brown. Using your Ultimate Spatula, carefully flip the onion slices over and repeat the cooking process for the second side. Remove to a plate for later use.
- Smash the meat balls in between 2 pieces of parchment paper until 1/8-1/4” thick. Season each side with Garlic Salt and black pepper. Place each patty on the griddle and cook until a crust has formed. (1-2 minutes) Again using the spatula, flip the patties and place a slice of American Cheese on each patty. Continue cooking the 2nd side until the cheese is melted and a crust has formed on the bottom.
- Place one patty on top of one of the slices of onion. Place a layer of sauce on the burger and then lay the 2nd patty on top of it. If you would like, add another layer of sauce. (optional) Now top it with the 2nd slice of onion. Dig in! I hope you brought napkins, because it is MESSY!!!
